What do you need?
A beam of 1x1cm
A strip of wood 12mm
A sturdy ruler
A saw and miter box
Sandpaper
Bison Contact glue
Glue clamps
A piece of thin plexiglas
Stanley knife and cutting mat
Piece of thick cardboard
Print or card of a Snowdrop Fairy

We have a picture of Mary Cecily Barker's Snowdrop Fairy that we want to frame for Candlemas. So we're going to make a wooden picture frame ourselves. We'll saw, glue, and probably paint it too. There's still some discussion about that. Should we varnish it or paint the frame white, or pink, but it will surely be beautiful.

How to make your own 10x15cm wooden picture frame

Mark 4 parts of the 1x1cm beam, 2 of    cm and 2 of     cm.

Saw the 4 parts in the miter box, saw them slanted.

Stick the four parts together with Bison contact glue.

Allow the glue to dry well, with clothes pegs on the corners.

Saw off 4 slats of the same sizes.

Sand the sawed off sides nicely smooth.

Glue the slats onto the already glued frame.

  • Sawing off a flush miter is quite difficult; if it's near flush at the top, it'll deviate slightly at the bottom. :))
  • That's why we fill the corners with some filler, where needed, and sand them smooth once the filler has totally dried.

Put on glue clamps and let the glue dry well.

Cut a piece of plexiglass to size, while the glue dries.

Sand the filler on the corners neatly smooth.

Cut the back to size, out of cardboard.

Now you have three of the four parts.

Paint the empty frame in a pretty colur.

Allow the paint to dry completely.

While the paint is drying, make a 'leg' (a stand) so that your frame can stand upright

Print de PDF with the pattern

Trace the pattern.

Cut the pattern out of cardboard.

Score the stand on the line.

Bend the stand on the score.

Stick theon stand on the back, now your frame can stand up.

Place the picture in the picture frame and find it a nice spot.

We place our picture frame on the seasons table, that really is a lovely spot for it!

Wishing you a beautiful Candlemas Day!
