How to make a Dream Catcher

as the Indigenous Americans made them

November 25, 2025 Natural materials Winter Needlework Nature

What do you need?
a fresh willow branch
a ball cotton, white or ecru
pretty shells
glass or stone beads
feathers
a pair of scissors

The mini-monsters are eager to make a dreamcatcher; they find them so beautiful. A brief explanation for those who don't know: dreamcatchers were first made long ago by the Native people who lived in North America. These people were called Indians, but now we call them Indigenous Peoples.

A beautiful Native American tradition was to hang a dreamcatcher above your bed. Bad dreams would get caught in the web, and good dreams could enter through the hole in the center. When the sun rises, your bad dreams will dissolve into the daylight, and you'll only remember your good dreams. So all children could sleep peacefully.

It looks hard to make such a dream catcher but actually it is not that difficult. You just have to repeat the same motion over and over until the opening in the center becomes smaller. It is just a little trick of sticking the thread in and pulling it through the loop. That's all!

How to make a Dream Catcher

Pluck the branch completely.

Bend the branch into a cicle.

Tie off with a small thread.

Lay a long loop like in the picture.

Insert the thread trough the loop and pull tight.

Do the same along the whole circle.

Until you have made full circle.

Go on in the same way.

Insert the tread in the middle.

Pull the thread tight.

Keep going around in the same way.

Decorate the Dream Catcher with beads and feathers, as you like.

Finally you tie the feathers and beads' threads on the underside.

Our dream catcher is ready and everyone thinks it turned out beautiful, just like a spider web!
